![]() ![]() Tucson Rodeo & La Fiesta de los VaquerosFor many years the Tucson Rodeo has been entertaining, and amazing people as it continues in much the same tradition as it has for almost three quarters of a century. The rodeo which started as an effort to bring winter vacationers to Tucson now helps to define a community. Almost half the population of the city turns out each year to see the event, and get a glimpse of the old west. Its rich history has been passed down from generation to generation of Tucsonans, and only grows stronger as the years go by. La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros or Festival of the Cowboys, as the rodeo is called, takes place every year in the middle of February. The eight-day event centers around the Tucson Rodeo, one of the top 15 professional rodeo events in North America and the largest outdoor winter rodeo on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association PRCA circuit. The rodeo is held at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds, 4823 South 6th Avenue, which seats 11,000 spectators. The highlight of the weekend is the two mile long Tucson Rodeo Parade, which boasted the longest non-motorized parade in the world. Over 250 western theme floats and buggies, horseback riders, Mexican folk dancers and musicians, and horse drawn coaches paraded past over 300,000 people. The Annual Tucson Women's Championship Rodeo, is scheduled to kick off Tucson's largest annual event. The professional rodeo enlists about 700 contestants from the United States and Canada competing for more than $300,000 in prize money. The Tucson Rodeo, the first major outdoor event on the Pro Rodeo schedule, gives visitors an opportunity to see real-life cowboys and cowgirls display their ability in the only sport in the world developed from work skills. "La Fiesta De Los Vaqueros Winter Tour Rodeo" is more than just watching a bronco buster trying to stay on an angry bull. The test of the cowboys' skills will include saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, bull riding, bareback bronc riding, team roping, barrel racing, and the Wrangler Bullfight. New to the event now will be Chuckwagon Races.
