Tucson International Mariachi Conference

The Tucson International Mariachi Conference, a weeklong celebration of Mexican music, art and culture to be held at the Tucson Convention Center in April.

Since the conference's inception, organizers have made education an integral component. It was their vision that the conference preserve folkloric music and they have succeeded in achieving this goal. Today, the Tucson International Mariachi Conference has become a five-day event, featuring a spectacular concert, student workshops and more than 1,000 participants from around the country.

The mariachi conference continues this tradition by helping to foster mutual respect and understanding between Hispanics and non-Hispanics through the celebration of music, dance, culture, family and spirit.

This award-winning conference is one of the largest cultural events in the United States and a model for other conferences nationwide. Students will work closely with the masters to learn basic to advanced techniques in guitar, guitarron, violin, trumpet, vihuela, harp, voice and various baile folklorico dance moves. The conference awards 100 workshop scholarships to students across the country and offers special concerts, melding students, mariachi greats and the highly regarded Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

Students from across the country will also show off what they have learned by performing in the ³Mariachi Showcase² Concert at the Tucson Convention Center Music Hall. The main event, entitled the ³Espectacular² Concert, is the following night featuring the world's greatest mariachis. Slated to appear are the legendary Mariachi Cobre, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, Los Camperos de Nati Cano, Los Arrieros and headliner Angeles Ochoa.

The conference closes the next night at Armory Park with the spectacular ³Fiesta de Garibaldi,² a traditional re-creation of Garibaldi Plaza in Mexico City featuring regional foods, game booths, mariachis and baile folklorico dancers. It will also feature an art exhibit showcasing the works of highly skilled artists displaying their Hispanic and Southwestern art.

Mariachi can't get anywhere near the free Fiesta de Garibaldi without catching it. The April festival final day will pack Armory Park from morning until night as families, young and old alike, make a day of it under the shade trees. More than 60,000 people are expected to join the festivities as this party for the whole family continues to grow year in and year out.

Taking place at the Tucson Convention Center at 260 South Church Avenue.
