UApresents Centennial Hall - University of Arizona

Scours the globe for performers who compel Tucsonans to flock to Centennial Hall on the University of Arizona campus. As the match is right, the elegant 70-year-old theater that is at the heart of Tucson's cultural life is packed with enthusiastic entertainment lovers. Tucson's University of Arizona brought 40 events to Centennial Hall in the 2002 season. Selling a bit more than 150,000 tickets for 90 performances.

Centennial Hall is a trailblazer who has the ability "to connect with Tucson" while showcasing a panorama of performers. Expanding Tucson's vision of the performing-arts world. For example, the 2001 season began in September with the Kirov Orchestra. It was followed by a week of "Cabaret." The day after that show closed, concertgoers were dancing in the aisles to Omara Portuondo of the Buena Vista Social Club. Since then, Tucsonans have been able to entertain themselves with Ravi Shankar, the Academy of Ancient Music, the Balé Folclórico da Bahia, "Ragtime," and the Boys Choir of Harlem.

Centennial Hall i link to the rest of the country and, in fact, the world in terms of the performing arts. University of Arizona gets out there and find out who these artists are, where they are in their careers and when they'll be ready for Tucson and will they be appropriate for Tucson.

In 1994, Centennial Hall's budget was $1.2 million with a staff of about 10. About 50,000 tickets were sold. In year 2000, there is a staff of 25 and a budget of $6.1 million. More than 150,000 tickets were sold. Two-thirds of the hall's budget comes from ticket sales.

Tucson's growth has helped him succeed. Because people move here from so many different backgrounds and regions, there's no one "Tucson perspective." So, audiences are open to new things. People here are interested in things they aren't necessarily completely familiar with. There is a sense of curiosity, particularly about the performing arts, and there is a willingness to discover and take a chance on something they've never heard of or don't know anything about.

Tucsonans are willing to pay more now. But because we "like a deal," Centennial Hall on the University of Arizona has begun a program that allows up to 80 percent of an audience to purchase tickets at a discount. And that, in turn, has electrified interest in Centennial Hall events.

Centennial Hall on the University of Arizona is located on campus at 1020 East University Blvd.
