Sheraton El Conquistador Resort and Country Club features 3 courses. Resort, the 9-hole par-34, is not to be taken lightly. It makes full use of the ravines and ridges in the mountainous desert, as well as the indigenous plant life. For those willing to try their fate, the course record of 32 will be hard to break on this short par-3 format. Sunrise, one of the 18-hole courses, overlooks the city. Its eighth hole, 188 yards, was voted "Toughest Par 3 in Tucson." The other 18-hole course, Sunset, has open fairways and long holes that provide the challege of negotiating desert vegetation. Recent clubhouse, cart path, and course improvements total $1 million. Open fairways and long holes provide the challenge of negotiating desert vegetation. A memorable hole is the 555-yard, par 5, Number 5, requiring every type of shot to play over a pond to a two-tiered green protected by bunkers. A waste bunker with pampas grass and yucca trees, a new landscaping trend here, has been added to the 16th hole. Designed by Jeff Hardin, it requires mountain-style play characterized by deceptive changes in elevation. Natural hazards were created from sand washes, ravines, gullies, cacti, and desert vegetation; it's designed to challenge both the low and high handicapper. It is truly an enjoyable desert golf experience in the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains.
